What is the difference between open and closed cell foam?
Now that foam insulation has caught on, it is time to figure exactly what kind of foam is right for you!
Open Celled Foam is .5lb foam- Icynene Brand Insulation. Closed Cell foam is 2.0 and not Icynene.
Open Celled Foam allows a minimal amount of air infiltration thus staying within acceptable codes. Closed Cell Foam allows no air movement.
Open Celled can be sprayed at depths of 10 inches or more (r-36+), Closed cell can only be sprayed at 4" (r-28)
Open Celled stays soft and pliable allowing for natural expansion and contraction of wood structures without pulling away. Closed cell is solid and will not move, thus allowing for possible future gapping around studs and structure. There are many other issues to consider like off gassing, fire ratings, fuel contribution rating and so on. You can call us for a better idea of exactly what the differences are but it is ultimately up to you to know exactly what you are putting into your home.
Can I get any Energy Rebate for Using Icynene?
Yes, Icynene qualifies for numerous home insulation upgrades and recommended by most energy auditors. We have a list of participating utilities companies and also have many of the rebate forms available at our office just give us a call to see if we can help.
What is the R-Value of Icynene?
3.6 per Inch or R-13 for
2x4, R-20 for 2x6, R-28 for 2x8, R-36 for 2x10.
These are 100% Effective R-Value Ratings, meaning there is no
compromise to the R-value. Electrical Boxes and Fixtures, Plumbing,
Duct Work and Odd Shaped and Sized Wall Cavities reduce the
insulating abilities of most conventional insulation's. This
can reduce Effective R-Values by up to 50% or more, however
since Icynene is custom made on site it will always fill each
void with maximum rated effectiveness.
How Expensive is Icynene?
Icynene is a premium insulation
product and will generally be more expensive than most conventional
insulation products, however the benefits associated with Icynene
makes it a far superior product and over the course of several
years, pay for itself in energy savings. Each project is unique
and price can vary greatly depending on the circumstances. It
is best to call our offices and consult with one of our representatives.
Is Icynene Safe for My Family?
Icynene insulation is the
safest insulation product you can use. It is hypoallergenic,
non-corrosive, has no chemical off gassing, is safe for people
who are chemically sensitive and/or have respiratory problems**.
Icynene has been used in healthy home projects across the country
by organizations like The American Lung and Heart Associations.
Energy Star Rated and Green Spec Listed, Approved for "Leeds and so on. "Icynene truly stands
above all others as a healthy alternative.
Can We Do Existing
Homes?
Yes, however the procedure involved with certain types of applications
and be tricky. If there is already insulation in the wall then
it will need to be removed, otherwise Icynene cannot be used
for that area. If the cavity is empty we can use the "pour
formula" via holes drilled thorough either the interior
or exterior wall areas, depending on the situation. Obviously
the best time to install Icynene in an existing home is during
some kind of renovation that gives use access to the necessary
areas. Remember it is a lot easier to remodel after we insulate.
Does
This Mean the Building is Too Tight?
Modern building science dictates the
essential need for adequate fresh air to be provided within
the living environment. We recommend a mechanical ventilation
system should always be used in any new or renovation project.

of fresh air for your building. We can provide you with an authorized
